Is a modular lamp fragile? All about Moodu's durability
Can a lamp you build yourself really be stable? This is a legitimate question when you discover Moodu for the first time. With its beech sticks and clips, the system may seem simple. Yet, its design is based on several years of experimentation to find the right balance between creative freedom and stability.
Clips designed to create stable structures
Moodu's stability relies first and foremost on its clip system.
The various connections allow the sticks to be assembled in multiple ways and to progressively build three-dimensional structures. The system has been developed so that elements can be assembled and disassembled by hand, without tools, while maintaining a stable structure.
The six types of connections thus offer different construction possibilities and allow for exploration of numerous forms.
Four years of experimentation
The Fabric & Clips system was not developed overnight.
Nearly four years of research, prototypes, and testing were necessary to find the right combination of strength, ease of use, and construction freedom.
The objective was precise: to create a clip solid enough to hold a structure, yet simple enough to be used without tools. The final shape of the clips is now protected by a patent.
The choice of solid beech wood
The material also plays an important role in the lamp's stability.
Moodu uses solid beech wood sticks, a wood chosen for its resistance and consistency. The beech used by Fabric & Clips comes from FSC-certified forests.
The combination of wood and clips allows for the creation of a light structure while maintaining good rigidity.
A stable lamp that remains free
Moodu is not a lamp with an imposed shape.
The principle is precisely to be able to experiment, move elements, dismantle, and start over. A construction may require a few attempts before finding the right balance.
The website also offers tutorials to gradually learn the different connections and build a first stable lamp.
This phase of experimentation is an integral part of the concept: stability does not preclude freedom; it becomes a creative constraint to play with.
What if a connection feels too tight or too loose?
Wood is a natural material. Variations in temperature and humidity can slightly alter the diameter of the sticks and thus the feel during assembly.
A connection may therefore seem more or less tight depending on the conditions. The site simply recommends trying another combination or adjusting the pressure.
A modular lamp designed to last
Modularity does not necessarily mean fragility.
In Moodu, the clips, solid beech wood, and construction system were developed together to allow for the creation of stable lighting structures, while retaining the possibility of transforming them.
Moodu is first and foremost a construction system: solidity allows you to build, and modularity allows you to start over.
